Alfred O Smokey Dreher Jr. 14 August 1934 – 2 December 2023

In loving memory of Alfred O. “Smokey” Dreher Jr., who peacefully joined his beloved wife, Diane, on December 2, 2023. Alfred, affectionately known as “Smokey,” lived a life of service, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his community and country.

Born on August 14, 1934, in Rockville, CT, Alfred’s journey was one of profound significance and impact. After graduating from Rockville High in 1953, he embarked on a remarkable career path, marked by service to both the nation and his local community. Joining the Army in 1955, he served as a Heavy Equipment Transport Driver before transitioning to civilian life, where he worked at Aetna Life & Casualty Insurance Company for over four decades.

However, Alfred’s true calling lay in his selfless service as a firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT). Beginning his firefighting journey as a Junior Firefighter in 1948, Alfred’s dedication knew no bounds. He served with distinction in various roles, including Hoseman, Ladderman, and Driver, before becoming one of the first EMTs in the Town of Vernon Fire Department. His contributions extended to the newly formed Rescue 441, where he served as a Driver and Paramedic, earning the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

Alfred’s impact reached far beyond the fire department. A graduate of The University of Hartford, he became a certified First Aid and CPR instructor for the American Red Cross. He was a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Vernon, where he served in various capacities for over 50 years.

In retirement, Alfred continued his spirit of service, volunteering with organizations such as the American Legion Post 14 and delivering meals for Meals on Wheels. An avid racing enthusiast and sports fan, he found joy in attending races and supporting his favorite teams, including the Boston Red Sox, New York Giants, and Hartford Whalers.

Alfred’s legacy of service, compassion, and community engagement will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a lasting impact on the lives he touched, and his memory will continue to inspire generations to come.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion 14 or Protectors of Animals, honoring Alfred’s lifelong commitment to serving others.

Alfred O. “Smokey” Dreher Jr. may be gone, but his legacy of selflessness and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
