**Honoring the Legacy of SSgt. Edwin Rivera: A Hero, Family Man, and Advocate for Afghan Children**

Staff Sergeant Edwin Rivera, a dedicated member of the Connecticut Army National Guard and a devoted family man, tragically passed away on May 25, 2010, at the age of 28. Rivera’s life was characterized by bravery, compassion, and a deep commitment to making a positive impact, both at home and abroad.

Born on May 10, 1982, in New London, Connecticut, Edwin Rivera grew into a man of valor and virtue. He graduated from Waterford High School in 2000 and soon after began his illustrious military career by joining the Connecticut Army National Guard. Initially serving as a chemical weapons specialist, Rivera found his true calling as a combat infantryman with Apache Company, 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry Regiment (Mountain) based in Norwalk.

SSgt. Rivera’s professional military education included prestigious courses such as the U.S. Army’s Airborne and Mountain Warfare schools and the Warrior Leader’s Course. His military service was marked by a fearless spirit and a clear vision of his role in the broader scope of global stability. Rivera’s second deployment to Afghanistan, part of the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, was focused on training Afghan security forces, police, and border patrol agents, demonstrating his commitment to long-term peace and security in the region.

Edwin Rivera’s dedication extended beyond the battlefield. He was profoundly affected by the hardships faced by Afghan children, inspiring him to return for a second tour in Afghanistan primarily to help improve their lives. His mother, Gladys Rivera, recalls him explaining how something as simple as a pencil, a scarce resource for Afghan children, was a symbol of hope and a motivation for his return to service.

At home in Waterford, Connecticut, Rivera was equally committed to his family. He worked as a security guard at the Millstone Power Station, managing a demanding schedule while his wife, Yesenia, worked during the day. His life in Waterford was centered around his sons, Rolando and Lorenzo, ensuring their well-being and providing for their future.

Rivera’s life, although tragically short, was filled with moments of joy, laughter, and an overarching desire to uplift those around him. His infectious humor and genuine care for others left a lasting impression on everyone he met—from his military comrades to neighbors and friends. Following his death, the Connecticut Governor, Jodi Rell, ordered all state flags to be flown at half-staff in his honor until sunset on the day of his interment, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he garnered.

Edwin Rivera is survived by his loving wife, Yesenia; sons, Rolando and Lorenzo; sisters, Naomi and Miriam Rivera; and numerous other family members and friends who continue to cherish his memory. In recognition of his profound impact, a fund—the SSG Edwin Rivera Children’s Fund—was established to support his sons, ensuring his legacy of love and care continues.

Staff Sergeant Edwin Rivera’s story is one of heroism, sacrifice, and the unyielding pursuit of a better world. His service and sacrifice remind us of the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Rivera will be remembered not only as a soldier but as a community pillar, a loving father, and a man who gave his all for the futures of children both at home and abroad.
