**Remembering CPL Christian Scott Cotner: A Devoted Marine and Beloved Community Member**

Corporal Christian Scott Cotner, a courageous and spirited young Marine from Waterbury, Connecticut, tragically passed away on May 30, 2008, in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. At just 20 years old, CPL Cotner’s dedication to his country and vibrant personality left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

Born on November 27, 1987, in Waterbury, CT, Christian was the cherished son of Graham and Karen (Christensen) Cotner. He grew up immersed in his community, attending Kingsbury Grammar School, North End Middle School, and Wilby High School. His early education was complemented by active involvement in the Boy Scouts of America and the ROTC program, laying the foundation for his future military service.

Following high school, Christian enlisted in the United States Marines Corps, driven by a deep sense of duty and patriotism. His commitment to service saw him rise to the rank of Corporal, assigned to the Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force based in Okinawa, Japan.

Christian’s interests extended beyond his military duties. He was a passionate enthusiast of computers and electronic gaming, and he loved building and flying remote-controlled airplanes—a member of the Nutmeg Flyers, he often shared this passion with his friends and family. His adventurous spirit was also evident in his love for bungee jumping and riding roller coasters, showcasing his fearless approach to life.

CPL Cotner was deeply integrated into his community and religious life, being an active member of the First Congregational Church of Waterbury. His life was a beacon of commitment to his faith, family, and country.

Survived by his loving parents, his brother Eric, grandparents June and Carl L. Christensen, and Billy & Gloria Cotner, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends collectively known as “The Crew,” Christian’s legacy is carried on by those who knew him best. His loss was deeply felt across the community, where he was remembered as not just a soldier, but as a brother, son, and a steadfast friend.

Christian’s military honors include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and Meritorious Mast, each a testament to his service and sacrifice.

CPL Cotner’s life was celebrated in a memorial service held at his family’s church, where attendees wore tropical shirts and leis, honoring his free-spirited nature. “This is the party Christian would have wanted,” remarked his mother, Karen, highlighting his joyous approach to life.

Today, we remember CPL Christian Scott Cotner not only for his heroic service but for the joy, courage, and love he brought into the world. His memory continues to inspire us all, serving as a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on their community and beyond.
