LeRoy Thomas Glover, a venerable and beloved member of the Shelton, Connecticut community, passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2021, at the remarkable age of 99. Born on June 9, 1921, to former mayor Charles D. Glover and Edith Hubbell Glover, Roy lived a full and impactful life, deeply intertwined with the history and spirit of Shelton.

Roy’s early years were shaped by his family’s strong community involvement and civic leadership. He was predeceased by his four brothers—Charles, Fred, Donald, and George—all of whom were also integral parts of the Shelton community, and his dear friend Aldea Dokla.

Military Service

Roy served his country with distinction during World War II as a Technical Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945. He was stationed in Okinawa, a critical site in the Pacific Theater. His service exemplified the bravery and dedication of the Greatest Generation, and he carried these values with him throughout his life.

Professional and Community Contributions

Upon returning home from the war, Roy joined his father in working for The Glover Construction Co., formerly known as Glover & Regan. His professional life extended far beyond the family business. Roy’s dedication to community service was evident in his numerous roles, including serving as director and Chairman of the Board of the Shelton Savings & Loan Association, and chairman of the Webster Bank Advisory Board in Derby. He was a tireless volunteer for the United Way and served as a director of the Shelton Boys & Girls Club for over 50 years, where he received ‘The Service To Youth’ Award for his exceptional contributions.

Roy’s influence extended to healthcare and recreation. He was a trustee of the Hewitt Memorial Hospital and a director of the Derby Recreation Camp. His commitment to service was also reflected in his involvement with the Masonic Order, King Hiram Lodge , the American Legion V.F.W. Post 16, The Port 5 National Association of Naval Veterans, and the Shelton Republican Town Committee, from which he received the Shelton John Davis Lodge Award in 1989.

Roy’s civic duties included serving as an auxiliary State Trooper in 1960 and being an honorary member of the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Association. His passion for aviation led him to the Experimental Aircraft Association, where he even built a helicopter in his backyard, showcasing his ingenuity and love for innovation.

Family and Personal Life

Roy’s personal life was as rich and full as his professional and community endeavors. He is survived by his former wife, Barbara W. Glover, and his children: son Thomas L. Glover of Shelton, and daughter Catherine D. Wesoly of Burlington, Connecticut. His legacy lives on through his five grandchildren—Jason Glover, Erin (Glover) Velush and her husband Evan, Amy Wesoly, Alyssa (Wesoly) Healey and her husband Jason, and Kristen (Wesoly) Woodworth and her husband David. Roy also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Liam Woodworth and Kaelin Healey.

Memorial Services

A funeral service to honor Roy’s life was held on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at the White Hills Baptist Church on School Street in Shelton. The service celebrated Roy’s life, reflecting his deep faith and community ties. He was laid to rest in the church cemetery, where military honors were accorded, acknowledging his service and sacrifice for his country.

Continuing His Legacy

In lieu of flowers, Roy’s family requested that donations be made in his memory to The Highland Baptist Cemetery Association of Shelton, The Shelton Boys & Girls Club, or The Derby Recreation Camp. These contributions will continue to support the causes Roy was passionate about, ensuring his legacy of service and community dedication endures.
