Today, we honor the remarkable life of Pvt. Edward Carl Kamens, Sr., a man whose legacy is as profound as the history he helped shape. Born on April 23, 1925, in Bristol, Connecticut, to the late Edward L. and Wanda (Schultz) Kamens, Edward’s journey through life was one of dedication, courage, and love. A lifelong resident of Terryville, he left an indelible mark on his community, his country, and most importantly, his family.

Edward’s valor was evident early on when he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, facing the horrors of the Battle of the Bulge and contributing to the liberation of a concentration camp. These experiences, though harrowing, showcased his unwavering courage and commitment to freedom and humanity.

After the war, Edward transitioned to a career as a mechanic for the Town of Plymouth, where his hard work and dedication were evident in every task he undertook. His commitment to service continued through his active involvement in his community and church. As a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Terryville, he not only served as past president and member of the church council but also lifted spirits with his voice in the choir, further testament to his multifaceted contributions to his community.

Edward’s leadership and service were recognized beyond his church involvement. He was a proud member and past commander of the American Legion Plymouth Post and an esteemed member of the Thomaston Masonic Lodge. Through these roles, he exemplified the virtues of fraternity, charity, and community service.

At home, Edward was a beloved husband to Bernice (Lampron) Kamens, a partnership marked by love, respect, and mutual support. He was a guiding light for his children, Edward “Skip” Kamens and his wife Mary of Thomaston, David Kamens of New Port Richey, FL, Sharon L. Brown and her husband Peter of North Bangor, NY, and Candace Kamens of Terryville. His role as a father was characterized by wisdom, patience, and an unyielding dedication to his family.

Edward’s influence extended to his siblings, Melvin Kamens of Harwinton, Frederick “Jack” Kamens of Eastham, MA, and Joan Molzon of Bethlehem, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. Though predeceased by his sisters, Ellen Schroeder and Erma Schittina, the family circle remained strong, enriched by his presence.

His legacy is further carried on by his nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, each of whom holds a part of him in their hearts. Through stories, memories, and the values he instilled, Edward lives on in the generations that follow.
