Condolences and Thoughts for Families of Three Georgia-Based Soldiers in Tragic Incident

Our hearts go out to the loved ones of Specialist Kennedy Sanders, Specialist Breonna Moffett, and Sergeant William Jerome Rivers, who tragically lost their lives in a recent drone strike in the Middle East.

Specialists Sanders and Moffett, known for their bubbly personalities and laughter, formed a close bond in the Army Reserve five years ago. Sergeant Rivers, with extensive military experience, had previously served a tour in Iraq before joining the same company of Army engineers.

These citizen-soldiers from various parts of Georgia perished in a drone strike near the Syrian border, leaving more than 40 others wounded. The families were shocked when uniformed military officers delivered the devastating news. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

While President Joe Biden assures a U.S. response, the Moffett family expresses hope for no escalation in violence, fearing further losses of American troops. Breonna Moffett celebrated her 23rd birthday just days before her untimely death.

Breonna, the oldest of four siblings, joined the Army Reserve in 2019 after high school and worked for a home care provider alongside her military service. She deployed overseas for the first time in August with the 718th Engineer Company, 926th Engineer Battalion based at Fort Moore.

Specialist Sanders, a 24-year-old native of Waycross, volunteered for the Middle East deployment, eager to explore a new part of the world. She was involved in coaching children’s sports and had aspirations of becoming an X-ray technician.

Sergeant Rivers, at the age of 46, had considerable military experience, joining the Army Reserve in New Jersey in 2011 and serving a tour in Iraq in 2018. He lived in Carrollton, about 45 miles west of Atlanta.

Governor Brian Kemp mourns the “inexcusable loss of life,” emphasizing the soldiers’ devotion to the country. Army Brigadier General Todd Lazaroski hails them as representing “the best of America.”

Flags in Waycross, Specialist Sanders’ hometown, are lowered to half-staff to honor her memory. Her parents recall her passion for jiu-jitsu and staying in shape during deployment. Despite occasional mentions of nearby drone activities, there was no sense of imminent danger.

Sanders, with plans for a motorcycle and dreams of homeownership, had a promising future cut short. Her mother reflects on the unfairness of her vibrant life ending so abruptly.

In this time of grief, we extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of these brave soldiers, remembering their service and sacrifice for our nation.
