7 April 1998 – 26 August 2021

Today, we gather to honor and remember the life of Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Christian Knauss, a dedicated soldier, beloved son, and cherished brother, who was born into this world on April 7, 1998, and tragically left us on August 26, 2021. Ryan’s journey from Corryton, Tennessee, to the ranks of the Army’s elite speaks volumes of his courage, commitment, and the love he had for his country.
Ryan’s early life in the rolling hills of Tennessee, where he played war games with his older brother, Tyler, and a close-knit group of friends, set the stage for what was to become a lifelong calling. Even as a child, Ryan’s destiny seemed intertwined with the military, his playtime mirroring the path he would eventually follow. His transition from private to public school marked a pivotal moment in his life, where he joined the JROTC cadet program at Gibbs High School. It was here that Ryan began the rigorous physical and mental preparation required to fulfill his dream of serving his country.
Undergoing personal workouts and adhering to strict dietary regimens, Ryan transformed himself from a lanky teenager into a formidable young man, ready to face the challenges of military life. His efforts did not go unnoticed, as he was awarded the Best Cadet of the Year for 2015-2016, a testament to his dedication and skill.
Enlisting in the Army during his senior year, Ryan was eager to “do what he really wanted to do and be boots on the ground.” His passion for his country and determination to serve at the forefront were unwavering. After graduating from high school in May 2016, Ryan embarked on the demanding journey of military training, which saw him excel in basic training, individual advanced training, and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia. His assignment as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was a proud moment, not just for Ryan, but for all who knew him.
Ryan’s deployment as a gunner in Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team to Afghanistan was a testament to his bravery and dedication to his role. His service in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel highlighted his commitment to his country and the safety of his fellow citizens.
As we remember Ryan today, we reflect on the life of a young man whose early fascination with military service blossomed into a profound legacy of bravery, dedication, and sacrifice. Ryan’s journey from the playful hills of Tennessee to the rigorous demands of military service exemplifies a life lived with purpose and passion.
To Greg, Paula, and Tyler, and to all who were blessed to know Ryan, may you find comfort in the memories of his incredible spirit, his unwavering dedication to his country, and the knowledge that his legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those he touched. Ryan’s life was a beacon of hope and bravery, reminding us of the extraordinary sacrifices made by those who serve. Today, we honor a true hero, Staff Sergeant Ryan Christian Knauss, whose life and service will never be forgotten.
