Honoring Our Heroes: Connecticut Army National Guard Aviation Units Return Home

In a momentous occasion that resonated with pride and gratitude, two Connecticut Army National Guard aviation units have returned home after a year-long deployment in the tumultuous Middle East. The Welcome Home ceremony, held at the State Armory in Hartford, was a stirring testament to the bravery and sacrifice of these valiant men and women, who served with unwavering dedication in one of the world’s most challenging regions.

During their deployment, soldiers from the esteemed 126th and 142nd Aviation Regiments undertook a wide array of critical missions, including resupply operations, aerial medical evacuations, and facilitating senior leaders’ travel throughout the region. Their exceptional professionalism and expertise were instrumental in executing over 150 medical missions and logging more than 3,200 combat flight hours in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Reflecting on their experiences, Sgt. 1st Class Carrie Dufour shared, “I was in Iraq for the entirety of the deployment.” Meanwhile, U.S. Army Cpt. Colin Gurry remarked, “Today’s been great. Good event to welcome home soldiers of 126 and 142.” These sentiments underscore the significance of the Welcome Home ceremony in acknowledging the sacrifices made by these soldiers and their families.

At the heart of their mission readiness lies the Army Aviation Support Facility in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. This cutting-edge facility spans 37 acres and serves as the operational hub for the Connecticut Army National Guard Aviation Program. Equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and meticulously maintained aircraft, including CH-47F Chinook heavy helicopters and UH-60A/L Blackhawk utility helicopters, it ensures peak performance and mission readiness.

Furthermore, the Connecticut Army National Guard Aviation Program boasts an exemplary safety record, spanning over 34 years without a major accident or mishap. This steadfast commitment to safety underscores the professionalism and dedication of every member of these elite units, ensuring the highest standards of operational excellence.

As these courageous soldiers reunite with their families and loved ones, their homecoming represents a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit. Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz expressed her gratitude, stating, “You represent the very best of Connecticut and the very best of our country.”

In addition to their military duties, families played a crucial role in supporting the deployed soldiers. Audrui Perkins, mother of Sgt. 1st Class Carrie Dufour, diligently sent care packages weekly, ensuring her daughter and fellow soldiers felt connected to home despite the distance. Perkins reflected, “Thank God for cell phones and Facetime. That helped a lot.”

As these brave soldiers settle back into civilian life, their remarkable service and sacrifice will be remembered and celebrated. Their return home is a testament to the enduring bonds of family, community, and patriotism. Welcome home, heroes.
