John J. Kozar Sr.
22 April 1921 - 5 February 2022

In loving memory of John J. Kozar Sr., who graced this world with his presence from April 22, 1921, until February 5, 2022. John, a cherished resident of Norwalk, embarked on his final journey at the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, MA, where he received compassionate care in the hospice unit since relocating there in August 2021.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, John’s legacy lives on through his son, John J. Kozar Jr., daughter Donna K. Sullivan, and grandson Jesse John Kozar. He was the pillar of his family, a loving husband to Celeste until her passing in 2006, and a father figure to Lawrence Sullivan and daughter-in-law Laura. His warmth extended beyond family, touching the lives of nieces, nephews, and the close-knit community of Norwalk.

Born in the heart of NYC but rooted in Norwalk, John’s journey was intertwined with service and sacrifice. Enlisting in the US Marine Corps during World War II, he bravely stood among the ranks, experiencing the trials of the Pacific campaigns, including the historic First Marine Landing at Guadalcanal. His pride in being a Marine stemmed not only from battles fought but from the unbreakable bonds forged in the crucible of camaraderie and loyalty, epitomized by his cherished motto, “Semper Fi.”

Following his honorable discharge, John’s hands crafted more than homes; they built bridges of support and generosity within his community. As a master carpenter with Emerson Industries, he left an indelible mark on landscapes from Connecticut to Cape Cod to New York. Even in retirement, his willingness to lend a hand and share his expertise endeared him to all who crossed his path.

John’s legacy is one of resilience, kindness, and unwavering devotion. Though he may have left this earthly realm, his spirit resonates in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him. In honoring his memory, may we all strive to embody the principles of Semper Fidelis that guided his remarkable life.
