2024 Light Over Darkness Walk

2024 Light Over Darkness Walk
The Irish American Home is proud to join forces with The Peter P. Monaco Jr. Detachment 40, Marine Corps League in this year’s 2024 Light Over Darkness Walk to raise funds in support of Detachment 40’s ongoing mission to “create hope through action” as they work to raise awareness for suicide prevention programs and promote local mental health resources for our Veterans and their families.
On Saturday, May 11th at 4:15 am, participants will once again gather as a community on our fields in the cover of night to carry candles as we walk to greet the sunrise together at 5:30 am. It is an extremely moving experience, known across Ireland as the most important sunrise of the year*.
Donations to the Marine Corps League, can be securely made electronically via their website www.mcldet40.org (click on DONATE button) or by check payable to PPM Jr. Det 40, MCL and mailed to their address at 980 Chestnut Hill Road, South Glastonbury, CT 06073 (or dropped off at the IAHS.) Donations of all amounts will be accepted at any time and very much appreciated.
Coffee, tea & Irish bread will be available. Breakfast tailgates allowed. This event will go forward rain or shine. For more information, please call/text Mary Curley 973-204-5609, Lil Holleran 860-614-7672 or Joe Cooper 860-306-9082.
*Note: This Suicide Prevention Walk coincides with Pieta’s Darkness into Light fundraising walks held annually throughout Ireland and the globe. Unfortunately, this year Pieta does not have an approved partner charity for events held in the U.S., but we pledge to continue our efforts to have the Marine Corps League recognized for 2025 as an approved U.S. partner charity.
Join us in carrying a candle as we circle the pitch (field) at the Irish American Home and walk towards the dawn together.
Let’s unite as a community as we welcome the light and hope a new day brings.
Thank you so much for your support!

Old Saybrook Memorial Day Parade

Old Saybrook To Host 2024 Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27th
OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. – May, 2024 – The Town of Old Saybrook will host its annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27th, 2024 with a special highlight featuring a military transport plane flyover of the parade route provided by the Connecticut Air National Guard between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. This year’s Memorial Day Parade will feature two ceremonies: a Dockside Naval Ceremony at 9 a.m. (rain or shine) followed by the parade at 10 a.m. ending at the Veterans Memorial Monuments on the Town Green on Main Street.
The day’s events on Monday, May 27th will begin with the Dockside Naval Ceremony assembling at 8:45 a.m. for all participating units at the Saybrook Point Pavilion parking lot located at the end of College Street, with a Wreath Laying Ceremony on the Connecticut River at 9:00 a.m. (rain or shine).
The Parade Assembly will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Stop & Shop parking lot off of Elm Street. The Parade will then step off promptly at 10:00 a.m. from Elm Street. The Parade will go straight across Route 1 to Main Street and then proceed to the Veterans Memorial Monuments on the Town Green, where a Memorial Program will be conducted. In case of the parade’s cancellation due to rain, the Memorial Program ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the Old Saybrook Fire Headquarters at 310 Main Street. This year, we are excited to announce that Gil Simmons, a United States Marine Corps veteran and Chief Meteorologist for NEWS8 WTNH, will serve as our Master of Ceremonies.
Once again by popular demand Lennell Holloman, a U.S. Army National Guard Veteran also known as the Boston Post Road/Route 1 “Flag Man” seen proudly waving the American Flag, has agreed to participate in the Old Saybrook 2024 Memorial Day Parade.
All veterans are invited to attend and rides in the parade route are available for those unable to march. Those interested should contact Max Sabrin, Old Saybrook 2024 Memorial Day Parade Committee member, at 860.395.5550.
