Talcottville Connecticut Memorial Day Parade 2024
Vernon’s Talcottville Memorial Parade, set to commence at 9 A.M. on Sunday, May 26, 2024, holds a revered place in Connecticut’s Memorial Day traditions despite its brief quarter-mile route. Beginning at the Talcottville Church on 10 Elm Hill Road, the parade winds through historic mills and homes before concluding at Mount Hope Cemetery, behind 100 Main St.
Featuring vintage cars, a fife and drum corps, and open participation for all, this parade emphasizes inclusivity, where spectators become active participants rather than mere onlookers. Following the parade, a poignant ceremony at Mount Hope Cemetery includes a recitation of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
At the heart of Mount Hope Cemetery stands a majestic Civil War memorial erected in 1869, one of the nation’s oldest, paying tribute to soldiers whose names adorn its stone structure. Among those honored are Capt. Frank Stoughton, Horace Hunn, Philip Foster, Henry Loomis, Alonzo Hills, James Bushnell, Orrin Brown, and Francis Brantley, each bearing witness to the harrowing toll of the Civil War through their sacrifices.
All are welcome to join the parade, which is short enough for the kids, assembling in the church parking lot at 10 Elm Hill Road at 8:30 a.m.

Wilton Memorial Day Parade 2024
The Wilton Memorial Day volunteer parade committee is hard at work planning the 2024 parade which is planned for Monday, May 27 at 10 a.m. The committee chair is Jim Newton and this year’s theme will be “Honor Their Sacrifice.”
The parade and parade committee are independent of the town and receive no municipal funds, relying on private donations to pay the parade expenses like bagpipers, porta-johns, wreaths and flags. Donations can be made to Memorial Day Fund, P. O. Box 75, Wilton, CT 06897.
This post was contributed by a community member. The views expressed here are the author’s own.
Memorial Day activities start with the Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the Wilton Kiwanis at the Wilton Congregational Church and end with the Memorial Service at Hillside Cemetery. This year’s Keynote speaker will be Army Veteran Paul Niche, and the parade Grand Marshal will be Don Hazzard, a Navy Veteran.
The Committee has issued the call for parade participants. Any groups interested in marching in the parade should contact Coleen Amero at: coleen@wiltoncongregational.org to receive the registration forms. Participants need to provide proof of insurance to march, and registration forms are due by May 17th.
American Legion Post 86 will place flags on the graves of veterans in all Wilton Cemeteries. If you have a veteran who you know that does not have a flag on his/her grave, please contact the Post 86 at legionpost86@gmail.com.
The Parade Committee is also seeking the names of Veterans who have passed away during the time since last year’s parade (June 2023-present) so that they can be honored during this years’ Memorial Service at Hillside Cemetery. If you know of a Wilton Veteran who has passed away during this timeframe please pass the following information: their name, dates of birth and death, and branch of service to: Jeff Turner at Turnernews@AOL.com. And finally, if you have served at least one (1) day on active duty in the Armed Forces since December 7, 1941, you are eligible to join the American Legion. The Wilton American Legion Post is actively seeking any new members who have served and have moved to Wilton. You can go to their web-site http://www.post86legion.org to fill out an application or you can e-mail legionpost86@gmail.com for more information.
