Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Lewis Cannata, born on March 2, 1950, in Waterbury, Connecticut. Marty, as he was affectionately known, touched countless lives through his kindness, dedication, and unwavering spirit.
Marty grew up in Cheshire, where his hard work and passion led him to become a skilled craftsman. As the owner and operator of Tri State Sales, he was known for his exceptional ability to design and install kitchens, a skill that reflected his creativity and attention to detail.
A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Marty served with distinction during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of Corporal. He lived by the Marine Corps motto, “Semper Fidelis” – Always Faithful – embodying this commitment in every aspect of his life.
Marty’s generosity and willingness to help others were constants in his journey. Whether lending a hand to family, friends, or even strangers, his kindness left an indelible mark on everyone he met. After moving to East Hampton, Marty continued to exemplify this compassion while surrounded by his loving family and friends.
He is remembered as a devoted husband to Joanne (Daniels) Valentine-Cannata, a supportive father figure to his stepchildren, David “DJ” Valentine, Jr., and Kristen Valentine, and a cherished grandfather to Brayden and Harper Russenburger. Marty also shared a close bond with his sister, Cheryl Youngquist, her husband, Biff, and his nephew, Jeffrey Youngquist, and his wife, Heather. His loyal companion, Scrappy, brought joy to his life in later years.
Marty faced challenges with courage and grace, including his battle with ALS. During this time, he received compassionate care from the West Haven VA and Middlesex Hospice, for which his family remains deeply grateful.
In honor of Marty’s enduring legacy, his family encouraged contributions to causes close to his heart, including the ALS Association Connecticut Chapter and the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.
As we commemorate Marty’s birthday, we reflect on the values he stood for: service, generosity, and unwavering faithfulness. His memory continues to inspire those who knew and loved him. Today, we celebrate not only his life but also the lasting impact he made on the world around him.
Happy Birthday, Marty. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know you.
