Return to Iwo Jima 80 Years After The Battle

WWII Veteran Joe Caminiti Returns to Iwo Jima at 100—80 Years After the Battle—Join Us in Honoring His Legacy at the Event on Sunday, April 27, 2025

On March 25, 2024, at 100 years old, Marine Corps veteran Joe Caminiti made a monumental return to Iwo Jima—a full 80 years after surviving one of the most brutal battles of World War II. His journey back to the island was not a product of any government initiative or media spotlight; instead, it was the result of the tireless efforts of one man—Neil Supranovich—who dedicated himself to making Joe’s return happen against all odds.

Joe Caminiti had been part of Company B, 1st Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division, which landed on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. Joe was among the Marines who would raise the American flag on Mount Suribachi, an iconic moment in the history of the United States. The battle was fierce and deadly, and Joe survived while many others did not. After the war, Joe continued to serve during the occupation of Japan, carrying the memories of the island’s horrors quietly for decades.

The Reunion of Honor in March 2024 was a significant event in Joe’s life. It was a joint U.S.-Japan ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Joe’s attendance wasn’t a given—it was made possible by the unwavering commitment of Neil Supranovich, a close friend of Joe’s, who took it upon himself to ensure that Joe’s return to the island would happen before it was too late. Neil became Joe’s strongest advocate, pushing through every bureaucratic hurdle and medical concern to bring his friend back to the island that had shaped so much of his life.

This is the actual article in Japanese. Japan newspaper did a story, but the Hartford Courant, Ct. paper has not printed on word. Shame. Awaiting the other articles they wrote about this trip.APR 13 AT 9:45 PM

However, Joe’s story has yet to be told in mainstream media, despite the profound impact his return had on both the U.S. and Japanese communities. His journey was further immortalized when a Japanese journalist interviewed Joe and later published a feature in a major Japanese newspaper, honoring his service and return. This recognition in Japan is a testament to Joe’s legacy and the bridge of understanding he helped build after the war.
