Honoring America’s Heroes: The Meaning and History of Military Appreciation Month

Each May, Americans pause to honor the brave men and women who have answered the call of duty. Military Appreciation Month is more than a series of dates on a calendar—it is a time to reflect on the selflessness, sacrifice, and courage of all who serve in the United States Armed Forces. It is a month of heartfelt gratitude, where the nation comes together in love and respect for the defenders of freedom.

Established through the tireless efforts of patriotic Americans and made official by Congress in 1999, Military Appreciation Month was created to ensure the service and dedication of the U.S. military community are never forgotten. The selection of May was deliberate—this month holds deep historical significance, aligning with several key military observances that span across generations of service.

Among these are Loyalty Day (May 1st), a celebration of American freedom and pride; Victory in Europe (VE) Day (May 8th), commemorating the end of World War II in Europe; Military Spouse Appreciation Day (the Friday before Mother’s Day), recognizing the unwavering strength of those who support our service members from home; Armed Forces Day (the third Saturday of May), honoring those currently serving in uniform; and Memorial Day (the last Monday of May), a solemn tribute to those who gave their lives in defense of our country.

Together, these days form the backbone of Military Appreciation Month. But the real meaning lies beyond the dates. It lives in the stories of valor on battlefields from Normandy to Fallujah. It echoes in the sacrifices made not only by those in uniform but by their families, who endure long deployments, missed milestones, and constant uncertainty with resilience and grace.

Military Appreciation Month reminds us that freedom is not free. It’s paid for by long nights on patrol, years away from loved ones, and in some cases, the ultimate sacrifice. It is this understanding that compels communities across the nation—including the CVB community—to fly flags higher, say thank you louder, and teach the next generation about the cost and value of liberty.

It’s also a time to celebrate the character and commitment of our veterans and active-duty service members. From those who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War, to those who have fought in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other missions around the globe, their dedication has safeguarded the ideals we hold dear. And while each military era has its own history, all are united by a shared promise: to protect and defend the United States of America.

As we observe Military Appreciation Month, let us go beyond the symbols and ceremonies. Let us reach out to a veteran. Listen to their stories. Thank a military family. Visit a local memorial. Volunteer with an organization that supports service members and veterans. In doing so, we not only honor the past—we affirm our collective responsibility to care for those who serve.

To every member of the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard—past and present—thank you. Your courage inspires us. Your sacrifice humbles us. And your service will never be forgotten.

May is Military Appreciation Month. Let us never take our freedom—or those who defend it—for granted.
