Born on May 20, 1942, in New York, NY, and raised in Brightwaters, Long Island, NY, Captain von Mahland’s life was marked by dedication to his country, his community, and his loved ones.

A graduate of Virginia Tech, William, affectionately known as Bill, earned a Master’s Degree in Architecture, which fueled his lifelong passion for building and restoration. After settling in Middletown in 1972, Bill became a pivotal figure in the local community. He served on the Middletown Inland Wetland Commission and played a crucial role in developing affordable housing, ensuring that the city grew both sustainably and inclusively.

Bill’s military service was equally distinguished. Serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, he earned the rank of Captain. His commitment to service continued with the Army National Guard in Connecticut, where he exemplified leadership and dedication. Bill’s military honors were a testament to his bravery and dedication, culminating in a burial with full military honors at the State Veterans Cemetery on March 31, 2017.

Beyond his professional life and military service, Bill was a man of many interests and talents. An avid boater and fisherman, he found peace and pleasure on the water. His skills as a craftsman were evident in the intricate wooden model boats he built and his meticulous restoration of his historic home and barn. This home was not just a structure but a sanctuary where he cherished watching the horses and spending time with his family.

Bill’s legacy is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Nada Jane (Smith) von Mahland, and their children, William H. von Mahland, Jr. and his wife, Zugeily, of Priceville, AL; and Hila J. Farnsworth and her husband, Jason, of Middletown. He was a proud grandfather to Ines, William, Jacob, Nayda, and Rose. His sister, Sandra Jones and her husband, Charles of Brightwaters, LI, NY; along with his nieces, Heather Jones and Courtney Cleveland of Long Island, NY, also remember him fondly.
