
Sgt. Benjamin Lewis Gilman, born on May 21, 1975, in Meriden, Connecticut, served with the 41st Engineer Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. Tragically, he lost his life on January 29, 2004, in Ghazni, Afghanistan, when a weapons cache he and six other soldiers were disposing of exploded. Initially listed as duty status unknown, he was recovered on February 2, 2004.
Gilman’s military career took him to Kuwait, Kosovo, and Afghanistan, earning him accolades such as the Bronze Star and Purple Heart posthumously, along with other commendations. Beyond his service, he was deeply engaged in his community, participating in programs like Big Brother/Big Sister and volunteering at the local hospital.
Born and raised in Meriden, Gilman was a proud graduate of Orville H. Platt High School, known for his involvement in various clubs and his dedication to volunteer work. He enlisted in the Army in 1996, leaving behind cherished memories and close relationships. He is survived by his mother, Edith R. Gilman, and maternal grandmother, Ruth A. Gilman, among other relatives and friends who remember him fondly.
