Honoring the Legacy of SPC Richard C. Emmons III: A True Hero Remembered

Specialist Richard C. Emmons III, a dedicated soldier and beloved family member, tragically lost his life on May 31, 2011, in Logar Province, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom. At just 22 years old, the North Granby, Connecticut native demonstrated unwavering bravery and commitment to service, leaving behind a profound legacy.

Born on July 8, 1988, in Christiana Hospital, DE, Richard spent his early years in Woodstown, NJ, before relocating to North Granby, CT, in 2002. A 2006 graduate of Granby Memorial High School and later from the Porter and Chester Institute in Enfield, CT, in 2009, Richard enlisted in the United States Army on September 23, 2009. He quickly excelled, achieving the rank of Specialist by April 1, 2011.

SPC Emmons was a signal support systems specialist with the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Polk, LA. His dedication to his role was unmatched, contributing significantly to the communication capabilities of his unit.

Richard’s military career was distinguished by his receipt of numerous awards and decorations, reflecting his courage and service. These honors included the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and Combat Action Badge.

His life was marked by a passion for the outdoors, exemplified by his love for hunting and cruising in his Ford F-150. Richard also had a deep appreciation for country music, further highlighting his rich personal interests and the simple joys that brought him happiness.

Richard is lovingly remembered by his mother and stepfather, Janice (Tighe) and William Hogan; his siblings, Morgan and Conor; his maternal grandparents, Ralph & Carol Tighe; his paternal grandmother, Arline Newsome; and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Richard C. Emmons, Jr., and his paternal grandfather, Richard C. Emmons, Sr.

The loss of SPC Richard C. Emmons III was not only a profound loss for his family but also for the community and the nation he served so selflessly. His legacy is a reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel and their families. Richard’s story is one of dedication, service, and love, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
