Died: August 22, 2010, Paktia Province, Afghanistan

Today, we remember and honor the life of SGT Steven Joseph DeLuzio, a dedicated soldier and cherished individual whose life was tragically cut short during his service in Afghanistan. Born on February 25, 1985, in Hartford, Connecticut, Steven’s early years in South Glastonbury were marked by his commitment to both his community and country.

Steven graduated from Glastonbury High School in 2003, where he served as president of his freshman class and co-captained the hockey team to a state championship. His leadership and teamwork extended beyond high school as he went on to attend Hofstra University, Norwich University, and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Hartford with a degree in accounting in 2009. Before his deployment, he worked as an accountant at JH Cohn in Glastonbury.

Steven’s military career began with the Vermont National Guard’s Co. A-3/172 Infantry 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. His valor was evident from his first deployment in Ramadi, Iraq, in 2006, where he earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal, and the Navy Unit Citation. His courage continued to shine during his second deployment in Afghanistan, where he was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, NATO Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Army Good Conduct Medal.

A true sports enthusiast, Steven was known for his love of the New York Yankees and Boston Bruins, and his active involvement in Glastonbury Little League, both as an umpire and coach. His warmth, protective nature, and infectious smile left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Steven is remembered fondly by his parents, Mark C. and Diane (Lysik) DeLuzio; his brother and sister-in-law, SGT Scott and Victoria DeLuzio; his fiancée, Leeza Gutt, with whom he was set to marry in September 2011; his grandfather, Joseph Lysik; and his nephew and godson, Adam DeLuzio. He is also survived by a wide circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Steven’s life was tragically cut short on August 22, 2010, during a fierce battle in Paktia Province, Afghanistan. His passing left a profound void, but his legacy of bravery, service, and compassion endures.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on August 30, 2010, at St. Paul Church in Glastonbury, followed by burial with full military honors at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations were made to the SGT Steven J. DeLuzio Memorial Fund, honoring his enduring spirit and sacrifice.

SGT Steven Joseph DeLuzio’s courage and commitment will forever be remembered. His life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his country and the love he had for those around him. As we reflect on his memory, we celebrate a life lived with honor, bravery, and boundless love.
