Today, August 31, we commemorate what would have been the 53rd birthday of Army Staff Sergeant Thomas E. Vitagliano, a dedicated soldier whose life was tragically cut short on January 17, 2005, in Ramadi, Iraq. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, on August 31, 1971, Vitagliano’s birthday is a poignant moment to reflect on his remarkable life and the profound impact of his sacrifice.

A Life Dedicated to Service

Thomas Vitagliano’s journey from a young boy with a passion for military history to a courageous Army Staff Sergeant is a testament to his lifelong commitment to service. After attending Notre Dame High School in West Haven, he continued his education at Virginia’s Hargrave Military Academy. Driven by a deep-seated desire to serve his country, Vitagliano joined the Marines before enlisting in the Army, where he became a valued member of the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment.

Heroic Sacrifice in Ramadi

On January 17, 2005, while conducting security and stability operations in Ramadi, Iraq, Vitagliano’s unit encountered a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED). In the face of imminent danger, he demonstrated extraordinary bravery. Recognizing the threat, Vitagliano pushed a fellow soldier to safety, sacrificing his own life to protect others. For this selfless act of heroism, he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star.

A Community’s Tribute

As we honor what would have been Vitagliano’s 53rd birthday, we remember his profound impact on his community and his nation. His funeral, held at Holy Infant Roman Catholic Church in Orange, Connecticut, was a moving tribute to his life and service. The ceremony, attended by around 300 mourners, was marked by the presentation of several medals, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, and Combat Infantry Badge.

John Hoffman, deacon at Holy Infant Church, encapsulated Vitagliano’s spirit, describing him as a fun-loving individual whose presence was magnetic. “Tommy’s life revolved around family—both his family here at home and his military family,” Hoffman said. This sentiment reflects the deep respect and affection held for Vitagliano by those who knew him.

A Legacy of Courage and Compassion

Vitagliano’s legacy extends beyond his military service. Known affectionately as “Superman” for his larger-than-life personality and selflessness, he was a beloved figure among his family and friends. His mother, Inger Lise Severine, his father, Gaetano Thomas Vitagliano, and his fiancée, Nerina Giolli, remember him as a man whose actions spoke volumes about his character and dedication to others.

Today, on his birthday, we honor Staff Sergeant Thomas E. Vitagliano by reflecting on his heroism and the values he embodied. His sacrifice serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of freedom and the bravery of those who serve. As we celebrate his life, let us remember the extraordinary courage and selflessness that defined him, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire and uplift us all.
