
Today, we honor the memory of Lance Corporal Lester Robert Atherden, born on September 6, 1944, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Although his life was cut short, his legacy endures through the remarkable courage and dedication he displayed.
Lester grew up in Bridgeport and, driven by a deep sense of duty, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Serving with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, G Company, Lester took on the challenging role of a Machine Gunner. His service number was 2011686.
On March 4, 1966, Lester made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Vietnam. His bravery and commitment to his country were evident throughout his service, culminating in his sacrifice near Chau Ngai, 9 kilometers northwest of Quang Ngai City, South Vietnam.
Lance Corporal Atherden’s name is etched on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, Panel 5E, Line 100. As we remember him today, we celebrate his unwavering dedication and the profound impact he made on those around him.
Lester’s spirit lives on through the stories shared by his family and the enduring respect of those who remember his service. We honor his life, his bravery, and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country.
