Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Lt. Col. Michael J. McMahon, a dedicated soldier and beloved family man. Born on October 23, 1963, in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Michael was raised in West Hartford, Connecticut. He was the cherished son of retired Lt. Col. Dennis McMahon and Elizabeth McMahon, and he graduated from Conard High School in 1981, where he began to show signs of the remarkable leader he would become.

Michael’s commitment to serving his country led him to the United States Military Academy, where he graduated in 1985 and was commissioned in the aviation branch. He devoted his life to military service, taking on various roles that culminated in his command of Task Force Saber in Afghanistan, overseeing critical provincial reconstruction efforts.

A proud husband to LTC Jeanette McMahon and a devoted father to their three children, Michael’s love for his family was evident in all he did. He instilled values of dedication, service, and love in his children, continuing a legacy of military commitment. Michael’s passion extended beyond his military duties; he was known for his deep bonds with his troops, whom he cared for immensely.

Tragically, Michael’s life was cut short on November 27, 2004, when he was killed in a plane crash while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. Despite his passing, his spirit lives on through the memories of his family, friends, and comrades. As we commemorate Michael’s birthday, we reflect on his unwavering dedication to his country and the profound impact he made in the lives of those who knew him.

Today, we honor Lt. Col. Michael J. McMahon, celebrating his remarkable contributions and the love he shared with all who were fortunate enough to know him.
