On October 24, we joyfully celebrate the life of Stephen Guy Beardsley Jr., affectionately known as “Guy.” Born in 1930 at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Connecticut, Guy’s remarkable journey was marked by dedication, love, and a commitment to service that inspired all who knew him.
Guy was the devoted husband of Patricia Ruth Burnett Beardsley, “Pat,” with whom he shared a beautiful marriage that lasted 50 years until her passing in 2006. Their love story began at Fort Hood, Texas, where they married in 1955. Together, they raised three wonderful children while traveling from military post to post, instilling in them the values of hard work and community spirit.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Guy served valiantly in the Korean War as a tank platoon leader and went on to complete two combat tours in Vietnam. After retiring from active duty in 1980, he became qualified as a paramedic in Texas, later returning to Shelton to honor his family’s legacy.
In 1991, Guy and Pat discovered their passion for organic farming, founding Beardsley Organic Farms, which later became known as Guy’s Eco Garden. His contributions to the community were vast; he helped establish eight local farmers markets, including the Downtown Shelton Farmers’ Market, and revitalized the Veterans of Foreign Wars Huntington Post 10466.
Guy was not only dedicated to farming but also to service. As one of the original organic farm certifiers for the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Connecticut, he contributed his expertise and passion to the organic farming movement. Since 2009, he shared his love for farming on WPKN’s “Organic Farm Stand” radio show, reaching out to educate and inspire listeners.
A man of deep faith, Guy was actively involved in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Huntington, where he served as a worship leader. His legacy lives on through his three children—Patricia, Colonel (Ret) Stephen G. Beardsley III, and Eric Burnett Beardsley—along with his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On this special day, we remember Guy’s impact on his family, friends, and community. His life was a testament to service, love, and dedication. As we honor his birthday, we celebrate the many lives he touched and the enduring legacy he leaves behind. Happy Birthday, Guy! Your spirit and love continue to inspire us all.
