William “Bill” S. Hesse, aged 75, passed away peacefully at his home on October 26, 2022, surrounded by his beloved wife, Joan, and his loyal dog, Chester. Born on February 2, 1947, in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Rita and Donald Butcosk.
A proud graduate of Maloney High School, Class of 1965, Bill was known for his talent as an accomplished swimmer. He continued his education at William & Mary College, where he developed his passion for learning and craftsmanship. A true perfectionist and jack of all trades, Bill was skilled in various fields, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and mechanics. However, it was his love for cooking that shone the brightest; he delighted in experimenting with new recipes and sharing his culinary creations with family and friends.
Bill’s dedication to his country was evident during his service in the United States Marine Corps, where he was a member of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, also known as “The Walking Dead.” As a combat-wounded veteran of the Vietnam War, he was awarded the Purple Heart along with several other medals for his bravery and service. The bonds he formed with his fellow Marines lasted a lifetime, reflecting the deep connections forged in their shared experiences. Bill was an active member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Polish League of American Veterans, and the Franco American Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Joan; his brother, Wayne Butcosk; his niece, Kim Spagnulo, and her husband, Shawn; and their sons.
In honor of Bill’s life and service, family and friends gathered for calling hours at John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home on October 28, 2022. A heartfelt funeral service was held that evening, with a procession the following day for his burial. He was laid to rest with military honors at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden, Connecticut.
As we remember Bill, we celebrate a life marked by love, service, and dedication to family and friends. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
