Staff Sgt. Ari Richard Cullers, a dedicated soldier and cherished son, tragically passed away on October 30, 2011, while serving in Afghanistan. Born on March 30, 1983, in New London, Connecticut, Ari’s life was marked by a profound commitment to his country, family, and community.

Ari grew up in Waterford, where he attended Clark Lane Middle School before graduating from Waterford High School in 2001. His love for knowledge and martial arts shaped his character, reflecting a blend of intellect and discipline that would serve him well in his military career. Shortly after high school, Ari enlisted in the United States Army, determined to make a difference in the world. He was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York.

During his service, Ari exhibited exceptional bravery and commitment, earning numerous accolades for his dedication and valor. Among his many awards, he received the posthumous Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and several Army Achievement and Good Conduct Medals. His commendations also included the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, highlighting his significant contributions to Operation Enduring Freedom.

Ari’s legacy extends beyond his military achievements. He was deeply loved by his family, including his mother, Robin E. Cornele, and stepfather, Tim Forsyth, who supported him throughout his life. He also leaves behind his brother, Jacob Cullers, who served in the Air Force, along with a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom admired and respected him.

The loss of Staff Sgt. Cullers was felt profoundly within his community. He was known for his kindness, compassion, and unwavering support for those around him. Ari’s family and friends will forever remember him as a loving and devoted individual who would do anything for those he cared about. He was predeceased by his beloved grandmother, Madeline Epperson.

A memorial service honoring Ari’s life was held on November 10, 2011, at Camp Niantic, where family and friends gathered to celebrate his remarkable life. Following the service, Ari was laid to rest in a private ceremony at St. Mary Cemetery in New London.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ari’s name can be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization dedicated to supporting veterans and service members. Staff Sgt. Ari Richard Cullers will be remembered not only for his sacrifices and bravery but also for the warmth and love he brought to the lives of those around him. His spirit lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, who continue to honor his memory and the values he embodied.
