Honoring CPL Salvatore Sandillo: A Lifetime of Service and Commitment to Community

Corporal Salvatore Sandillo, a dedicated U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and esteemed community member, passed away peacefully at his Wallingford, Connecticut home on May 9, 2018, at the age of 69. Born on November 12, 1948, in New Haven, Connecticut, Salvatore, known affectionately as Sal, grew up in a tight-knit community that would shape his lifelong values of service and loyalty.

Salvatore enlisted in the U.S. Army and served valiantly during the Vietnam War. His bravery was recognized with the Combat Infantry Badge, a testament to his front-line experiences and personal courage under fire. After his honorable discharge, Salvatore continued to embody the spirit of service by contributing to his local community in Wallingford. He worked diligently as a Construction Inspector for the Town of Wallingford Engineering Department, ensuring safety and quality in local developments.

His commitment extended beyond professional duties; Salvatore was a life member of the Wallingford Rod & Gun Club and the V.F.W. Post 591, where he engaged actively in veteran affairs and community service. An avid saltwater fisherman, he found solace and joy in the seas he cherished, often sharing this passion with friends and family.

Salvatore’s personal life was filled with love and deep connections. He leaves behind his beloved wife of many years, Patricia T. (Jasinski) Sandillo, who shared his commitment to family and community. He is also survived by his brother, John “Butch” Sandillo and his wife Lynn; nephew, Michael Sandillo and his wife Traci; niece, Wendy Sandillo; and great-nephew and nieces, Michael Jr., Taylor, Kailey, and Gianna. His friendships were a source of strength and happiness, evident in his close bonds with his best friends, Antares, Cash, and Nick.

Sal’s life was marked by his commitment to duty, love for his family, and dedication to the values he held dear. Though he was predeceased by his stepfather, Edward Haman, and stepbrother, Spencer “Corky” Haman, his legacy of integrity, courage, and community spirit lives on. Salvatore Sandillo will be remembered not only for his military valor but also for his enduring contributions to the Wallingford community and the lives he touched. His story is one of heroism, service, and profound humanity, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him.
