Today, we celebrate the remarkable life of Fred D. Carlage, who would have turned 107 years old on November 19, 2023. Born in Union, Connecticut, Fred lived a life full of adventure, love, and dedication.

Fred’s journey began in 1916, where he was raised in a family that instilled strong values and a sense of community. He graduated from Putnam High School and pursued further education at Rhode Island College and the OSHA Institute in Chicago, Illinois. His thirst for knowledge and skill development set the stage for a diverse and impactful life.

During World War II, Fred served honorably for four and a half years. He started with the Army’s 191st Tank Battalion before transferring to the Air Force. Based in Australia with the 5th Air Force 380th Bomb Group, Fred earned his dual commissions as a Flight Navigator and Bombardier. His bravery and skill shone through as he flew 47 combat missions, ultimately achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.

After the war, Fred settled in Woodstock, Connecticut, where he continued to nurture his passions. A talented saxophone and clarinet player, he became an active member of several bands, most notably the Four Aces. Music brought him joy, and he cherished the moments spent performing and sharing his love for the arts.

Fred was also a proud lifetime member of the American Legion and a devoted communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church in Pomfret. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, celebrating countless game days with friends and family. Hunting and fishing were among his favorite pastimes in his youth, but his greatest joy came from the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating lasting memories that would be treasured for generations.

Fred is remembered lovingly by his son Bruce and daughter-in-law Michele, daughter Sharon and her companion Michael, son Dean and daughter-in-law Debra, along with six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Esther (Conley) Carlage, and siblings Frank, Marie Bednarz, and Elsie Ruda.

As we honor Fred on what would have been his birthday, we reflect on the legacy he left behind—a legacy of service, music, and family love. His spirit continues to inspire those who knew him, reminding us of the importance of cherishing every moment and supporting one another through life’s journey. Happy Birthday, Fred D. Carlage!
