Remembering SSGT Joseph Arthur Heneghan: A Life of Service, Family, and Honor

Staff Sergeant Joseph Arthur Heneghan, a proud member of the Greatest Generation, passed away on November 25, 2009, leaving behind a legacy rooted in service, strength, and deep family devotion.

Born on May 2, 1921, in Trumbull, Connecticut, Joseph grew up during a time of historic change. When his country called, he answered with unwavering resolve, serving in the European theater during World War II. His bravery and dedication earned him deep respect among his peers and fellow servicemen. Long after the war, he remained committed to honoring those who served, staying active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and never forgetting the bond forged in battle.

Returning to Connecticut after the war, Joseph found new purpose in building the future—literally. He became a highly skilled large crane operator and a respected member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 478. His work shaped skylines and projects across the region, always carried out with the same discipline and pride he showed in uniform.

On April 19, 1952, Joseph married Ann Marie Sullivan, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with love, resilience, and family. Together, they raised ten children: Joseph Jr., Kathleen, Thomas, Michael, Marguerite, Kevin, Joanne, Maureen, Timothy, and Mary. Known as “Poppy” to his 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Joseph embraced each moment with quiet strength and a loving heart.

Joseph’s memory is also cherished by his surviving sisters, Mary Smith and Bertha Kiernan, and by the generations of family who carry forward his values. He was laid to rest with military honors at Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, where he remains in the company of heroes.

Today, we honor SSGT Joseph Arthur Heneghan not only for his service in World War II but for the life he built afterward—a life defined by hard work, deep faith, and devotion to those he loved. His story lives on in the hearts of his family and in the history of a grateful nation.
