John “Jack” George Casey Jr., a cherished Groton resident and Vietnam War veteran, left an indelible mark on his community and country through his unwavering service and dedication. Born on September 30, 1946, in Allston, Massachusetts, Jack’s journey began with a spirited youth at Brighton High School, known for his humor and charm.
After graduating high school in 1964, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Disbursing Clerk. His military career took him to the Naval Submarine Base in New London and later to Vietnam, where he volunteered for an extended tour of duty. Jack’s service in Vietnam with the Naval Security Activity in Da Nang was marked by his bravery and commitment, earning him numerous awards including the Navy Unit Commendation and the Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze stars.
Following his discharge, Jack returned to Groton and began a distinguished career at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, working there for 33 years before retiring in 2001. His retirement, however, did not slow him down. Jack devoted himself to volunteer work, making significant contributions to his community. He served with Meals on Wheels, bringing nourishment and care to seniors, and continued to be a staunch supporter of veterans through his work with the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame and various veterans’ organizations.
Jack was deeply involved in the Patriot Guard Riders and the American Warrior program, escorting World War II veterans to their memorials in Washington, DC. His commitment to honoring veterans and his selfless nature were evident in every role he undertook, from his service as a Registrar for various military memorials to his participation in numerous veterans’ Stand-Down events.
His legacy of compassion, patriotism, and humor lives on through the countless lives he touched and the numerous accolades he received, including the Outstanding Citizenship Award from the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Jack is remembered not only for his military service but also for his remarkable contributions to his community and his unwavering dedication to helping others. His humility and selflessness set a powerful example of leadership and generosity.
Jack is survived by his wife, Carol; stepson Roderic “Ricky” Call; brother Donnie; sister Ann; niece Karin Boucher; great-nephew Taylour Boucher; and other family members.
A celebration of Jack’s life was held on January 23, 2022, at the Baymont Hotel in Groton. In lieu of flowers, donations were made to the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 270.
Jack’s legacy continues to inspire, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
