Today, we remember and honor Sgt. David J. Coullard, a courageous Marine whose life was marked by dedication and bravery. Born on January 16, 1973, in Glastonbury, Connecticut, David’s journey was one of purpose and valor, culminating in his ultimate sacrifice on August 1, 2005, during combat operations in Haditha, Iraq.

From a young age, David aspired to join the U.S. Marine Corps. His dream, nurtured since he was nine years old, became a reality upon his graduation from Glastonbury High School in 1992. Known for his quiet determination and passion, David’s high school yearbook reflected his ambitions: “Thank you, Mom, for everything. Marines, here I come.” After briefly attending Manchester Community College, he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve, embarking on a path that took him around the world.

David’s military service was distinguished by numerous deployments, including assignments in Parris Island, Norway, the Swiss Alps, Panama, Japan, and the Philippines. His role as a sniper highlighted his exceptional skill and unwavering commitment to his unit. When the call came for volunteers to serve in Iraq, David did not hesitate. His desire to fulfill his duty and protect his comrades led him to the front lines of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Throughout his career, David’s dedication and bravery were recognized with multiple awards, including two Purple Heart Medals, the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Iraq Campaign Medal. These honors serve as a testament to his heroism and the profound impact he had on those around him.

David’s love for the outdoors was another defining aspect of his life. An avid hunter, he enjoyed tracking deer and boar, always ensuring a respect for nature by never leaving an animal injured. His mother, Anita Dziedzic, who raised him as a single parent, shared many of these adventures with him. Their bond was unique and profound, characterized by shared hobbies and mutual respect. David’s sense of humor and infectious smile brought joy to his family and friends, even in the most challenging times.

In the months leading up to his death, David demonstrated his resilience and commitment. Despite being injured in the line of duty, he quickly returned to serve alongside his comrades, maintaining regular communication with his family through brief but heartfelt emails. His professionalism and dedication were evident in every aspect of his life.

David’s passing left an indelible mark on his family, friends, and community. Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell honored his memory by ordering all state flags to be lowered to half-staff, recognizing the immense sacrifice he made for his country. His mother and stepfather continue to uphold his legacy, drawing strength from his bravery and the promise he made to his mother during a time of grief: “Mom, you’re going to be OK.”

On this day, as we commemorate David’s birthday, we celebrate the life of a true American hero. Sgt. David J. Coullard’s legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the freedoms he fought to protect. His story is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women, and the enduring spirit of those who serve. He is a hero, forever remembered and cherished.
