Edgar R. Hensley Jr., a dedicated husband, father, Marine, and beloved member of the Bridgeport community, passed away on February 8, 2007, at the age of 57. Born on April 9, 1949, in DeKalb, Illinois, he was the son of the late Edgar R. and Joyce Arlene (Cadie) Hensley Sr. Edgar spent the last 27 years of his life in Bridgeport, building a legacy of service, love, and cherished memories.

A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Edgar served with distinction during the Vietnam War. His bravery earned him the Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Frame, honors that reflect his unwavering courage and sacrifice.
After his military service, Edgar applied his work ethic and leadership skills in civilian life, spending eight years with Saint Michael’s Cemetery and 11 years as a night supervisor at Home Depot. Beyond his professional commitments, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Edgar was an avid fisherman who relished blue fishing at Saint Mary’s by the Sea and catfishing on Lake Lillinonah. He also loved bowling, frequenting Stratford Town Fair Lanes and Fairfield Nutmeg Bowl, where he forged lasting friendships.
Edgar was a devoted family man. He shared a loving marriage with his late wife, Leilani R. (Kaleikini), and together they raised a large and vibrant family. He is remembered with love by his children: Edgar R. Hensley III and his wife Daisy, Kimo A. Hensley, and Joseph K. Hensley, all of Bridgeport; Tammy Lynn I. Gallagher and her husband Roy, of California; Dorine E. Manlapit of Bridgeport; Kiera Hensley of California; and Krista Mack and her husband Jeffrey, also of California.
Edgar’s legacy extends to his 12 grandchildren—Taylor Hensley, Jeffrey Mack Jr., Ariana Costanzo, Shayla M. Manlapit, Lawrence P. Manlapit III, Davian Manlapit, Kaiya Manlapit, Alec D. Hensley, Kimo A. Hensley, Leilah Hensley, Sarah Hensley, and Sage Hensley—as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members across Hawaii, Illinois, and Tennessee. His sister, Cheryl Hessels of Shelton, along with her children, Dawn and Ronald Hessels, and their families, also hold him close in their hearts.
Edgar was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Ronald Hessels Sr., but the bonds of family and community he cultivated remain a testament to his kindness and dedication.
Edgar R. Hensley Jr. will always be remembered as a man of honor, resilience, and compassion—a Marine, a father, and a friend who left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
