Thomas Joaquim Borges, aged 66, of Bethel, CT, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Danbury Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Gloria (Gray) Borges. Born in Norwalk, CT, Tom was the son of the late Joseph and Leduina (Carvalho) Borges.

Tom’s life was marked by his dedication to service and craftsmanship. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, demonstrating his commitment to his country. Following his military service, he transitioned to a career as a Sheet-metal Smith and later became a master carpenter. In Fairfield County, he was renowned as a custom home builder, known for his meticulous finish work. His talents extended to Stew Leonard’s, where he spent over a decade designing and building counters and display cases for their stores.

From 1971 to 1978, Tom and his wife Gloria owned and operated “The Tackle Box,” a bait shop in East Norwalk, CT. His passion for fishing was reflected in his involvement with the Norwalk Striped Bass Club, where he served as past President. Tom was also deeply committed to his community, actively participating in the Wilton Red Cross Center as a First Aid instructor and a Red Cross Gallon Blood Donor.

In addition to his professional and community contributions, Tom enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled airplanes with the Fly R C Club in Southbury, CT. His diverse interests and skills were a testament to his multifaceted personality.

Tom is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gloria, and their three daughters: Renae Simon of Titusville, FL, Jennifer Smith of Bristol, CT, and Christina Lee of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and great-grandfather to two great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother, Armand Borges of Norwalk, CT, and his two sisters, his twin Delores Manca of Danbury, CT, and Leonora Montanye of Waterbury, CT. Tom was predeceased by his older brothers, Servio Borges of Norwalk, CT, and Acasio Borges of Redding, CT. He is also remembered fondly by several nieces, nephews, their children, and grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at the Hull Funeral Home in Danbury, CT. Family and friends gathered to pay their respects and celebrate Tom’s life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were suggested to Hearts Around the World Inc. or to a charity of one’s choice, reflecting Tom’s spirit of giving and community service.

Thomas Joaquim Borges’s legacy of service, craftsmanship, and community involvement continues to inspire all who knew him. His memory lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless people he touched throughout his life.
