Vietnam Veterans Day and the 51st Anniversary of the End of the Vietnam War – Connecticut Veterans Perspective
On March 29 each year, the nation observes National Vietnam War Veterans Day, a date formally established in 2017 to recognize and honor the service and sacrifice of those who served during the Vietnam War. The date reflects March 29, 1973, when the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam and the final group of American prisoners of war returned home.
As the Connecticut Veterans Bulletin releases its Vietnam Veterans Day Edition on Saturday, March 28, 2026, it aligns with the 51st anniversary of the end phase of U.S. involvement in the war. For Connecticut’s Vietnam Veterans, this moment remains deeply personal and historically significant.
Connecticut’s Vietnam Veterans: Service and Sacrifice
More than 100,000 men and women from Connecticut served during the Vietnam War era. Of those, 612 Connecticut service members lost their lives, their names permanently inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Their sacrifice reflects the cost borne by communities across the state—from Hartford and New Haven to smaller towns whose generations answered the call to serve.
Connecticut units and individual service members continue to be recognized across all branches of the U.S. military for their contributions during this period. Many returned home to a nation divided over the war, often without the recognition afforded to previous generations. Over time, that experience shaped the broader understanding and appreciation of Vietnam Veterans within Connecticut and across the country.
Recognition Long Overdue
National Vietnam War Veterans Day addresses a long-standing need to formally recognize those who served during the Vietnam era. It affirms that their service is honorable and deserving of respect, regardless of the political and social climate at the time of their return.
In Connecticut, observances continue to take place at veterans’ organizations, memorials, and community gatherings across the state. These events bring together veterans, families, and communities to honor service and preserve the memory of those who were lost.
The 51st Anniversary: A Living Legacy
The 51st anniversary of the end phase of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War represents both reflection and continuity. Vietnam Veterans remain an active and influential part of Connecticut’s veteran community.
They participate in mentorship, peer support, and leadership roles across organizations such as the American Legion, VFW, and other local groups. Their involvement helps sustain a statewide network of programs, events, and services designed to support veterans of all eras.
Their continued presence ensures that the experiences of Vietnam Veterans remain relevant, informing how Connecticut’s veteran community supports one another today.
