
Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Lance Corporal Thomas James Tingley, born on February 2, 1948, in Fairfield, Connecticut. As a devoted son of Frank H. Tingley and Wynona Tingley and a beloved brother to Nancy and David Tingley, Thomas brought light and joy to all who knew him. His birthday serves as a heartfelt reminder of the incredible person he was and the enduring impact of his selfless service.
A Life of Dedication
From a young age, Thomas exhibited the qualities of determination and courage that would later define his remarkable life. On July 5, 1966, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in New Haven, Connecticut. His unwavering commitment to duty and patriotism led him to embark on a journey that would forever shape his legacy.
Thomas arrived in Vietnam on August 16, 1967, assigned to Company B, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division (Reinforced), III Marine Amphibious Force (III MAF). As a Marine, he embraced his role with bravery and dedication, working alongside his unit to carry out essential reconnaissance missions in the challenging terrain of northern Quang Tri Province.
Honoring His Service
During his deployment, Lance Corporal Tingley exemplified the highest ideals of the Marine Corps. In December 1967, his unit operated from the Khe Sanh Combat Base, conducting vital missions in the region. On December 30, 1967, Thomas demonstrated extraordinary courage during an ambush west of Khe Sanh. Despite intense enemy fire, he and his fellow Marines held their ground, ensuring the safety of their comrades. His ultimate sacrifice that day remains a testament to his valor and selflessness.
