Staff Sergeant Joseph E. Phaneuf II was born on December 7, 1968, in Putnam, Connecticut. On this day, we honor his life, his legacy, and the incredible impact he made on his family, community, and country. Joseph’s dedication to service, his love for his family, and his commitment to his passions continue to inspire all who knew him.

A Life of Service

From a young age, Joseph demonstrated a deep sense of duty and a willingness to serve others. His military career began in the 1990s, and following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, he re-enlisted, answering the call to protect and defend his nation. As a member of the Connecticut National Guard, he served with the 118th Medical Battalion during a deployment to Iraq in 2004 and later joined the Headquarters Company of the 1st Battalion, 102nd Infantry Brigade in 2005.

Joseph’s service in Afghanistan exemplified his bravery and commitment to his fellow soldiers and his country. While his life was tragically cut short in December 2006, his memory lives on as a symbol of sacrifice and dedication.

Beloved Family Man

Joseph’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was a devoted husband to Michele Kozey Phaneuf for 11 wonderful years and a loving father to their three children: Ryan, Danielle, and Jordan. His parents, Peter Phaneuf and Barbara Ortega Phaneuf, and his siblings, Dennis, Tony, Rob, Tiffany, Holly, and Veronica, all held him dear. His extended family, including his parents-in-law, Greg and Teddy Kozey, sister-in-law Sharon Kozey, and 13 nieces and nephews, were an integral part of his life.

Joseph’s love for his family was evident in everything he did, from coaching his children’s basketball, T-ball, and baseball teams to capturing cherished moments through his passion for photography.

A Pillar of the Community

Joseph’s dedication extended beyond his family and military service. As a member of the Eastford Volunteer Fire Department, he worked tirelessly to protect and serve his neighbors. His enthusiasm for sports and community involvement made him a cherished coach and mentor to countless young athletes. Joseph’s unwavering support for his favorite team, the Michigan Wolverines, was another reflection of his vibrant spirit and loyalty.

Honoring His Legacy

On this special day, we celebrate Joseph’s life and the many ways he touched those around him. His commitment to service, his love for his family, and his contributions to his community continue to inspire us. Joseph’s final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery is a testament to the profound impact of his life and the respect he earned through his actions.
