Today, we honor and remember the birthday of Captain Eric Thomas Paliwoda, born on February 23, 1975, in Hartford, Connecticut. Though Eric’s life was tragically cut short in 2004 during his service in Iraq, his legacy continues to inspire and resonate with all who knew him.

Eric grew up in Farmington, Connecticut, and was known for his exceptional skills as a basketball player at West Hartford’s Conard High School, where he earned All-American honors. His academic excellence and athleticism led him to the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point.

At West Point, Eric thrived both as a student and an athlete, playing Division I basketball and participating in track and field. Upon graduating in 1997, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Eric’s military career was marked by dedication and achievement, including his role as Company Commander for Bravo Company, 3rd Engineer Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His military honors, including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star, reflect his courage, leadership, and sacrifice.

Eric’s passion for service extended beyond his military duties. He was excited to return to West Point as an instructor in the Department of Environmental Studies and was planning his wedding to fiancée Wendy Rosen before his untimely death.

On his birthday, we remember not only his bravery and service but the profound impact he had on his family, friends, and all who crossed his path. Eric’s legacy of courage, commitment, and selflessness continues to inspire and remind us of the sacrifices made by heroes like him.

Though he is no longer with us, Captain Eric Thomas Paliwoda’s life and achievements remain a source of pride and inspiration. Today, we celebrate his birthday by reflecting on the remarkable man he was and the lasting impact of his life of service.
