Celebrating the Life of John Sosik

John Sosik, a cherished member of the Shelton community, passed away at the age of 93 on January 18, 2022, at his home, leaving behind a legacy of service, patriotism, and love for his family and friends. He was the beloved husband of the late MaryEllen (McGrath) Sosik.

Born in Bridgeport to the late Joseph and Olga Sosik, John’s early years were marked by his dedication to both academics and athletics. A proud graduate of Bullard Havens, he was a member of the school’s state championship basketball team, a testament to his team spirit and determination.

John’s sense of duty and love for his country led him to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His commitment to veterans and service members never wavered throughout his life. He spent many days visiting the Veterans Affairs Hospital and supporting the American Legion, where he could often be found distributing red poppies to honor fallen soldiers. As the former commander of the Shelton VFW Post 1236, John was a constant advocate for veterans’ causes and remained deeply involved with the Shelton American Legion. His patriotism was reflected not just in words, but in the countless hours he devoted to these organizations.

In his later years, John found joy in staying active. His daily summer bocce games at the West Haven boardwalk, where he formed lasting friendships, and his commitment to fitness were cornerstones of his life. Workouts and physical activity were not just hobbies for John; they were essential to his vitality.

John had a long and rewarding career, retiring from Perkin Elmer after many years of dedicated service. He had previously worked at CBS Labs, where he took pride in the company’s role in the development of the Hubbell and Copernicus telescopes, a notable achievement that remained close to his heart.

John is survived by his two children, Wayne Sosik and his wife, Cheryl, of Stratford, and Rhonda Sosik of Shelton; as well as his three grandchildren, Ryan, Jake, and Emily. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Dorothy Kollar, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Ellie. He was predeceased by his wife, MaryEllen, his sister, Tanya Sosik, and his brothers, Nicholas and Alexander Sosik.

John’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His devotion to his family, country, and community left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to call him a friend.

A funeral service to celebrate John’s life was held on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at 10 a.m. at the Pistey Funeral Home in Stratford. Interment, with military honors, followed at Lakeview Cemetery. For those wishing to leave condolences, please visit http://www.pisteyfuneralhome.com.
