Honoring the Life and Legacy of Alexander Gromoshak

Alexander Gromoshak, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and proud World War II veteran, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2020, in his Terryville, Connecticut, home. Surrounded by the love of family, close friends, and devoted caregivers, Alexander’s remarkable life came to a close at the age of 98.

Born on February 24, 1922, in Terryville, Alexander was the son of Harry and Orina Gromoshak. A man of resilience and dedication, he served his country with honor as a member of the U.S. Navy’s Seabee Battalion during World War II. Following his military service, Alexander began a long and distinguished career as an Operating Engineer with White Oak Local .

Alexander’s faith was a cornerstone of his life. As a lifelong parishioner of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Terryville, he contributed to the church community with unwavering devotion. His dedication to community and camaraderie was further reflected in his memberships with the Bristol and Thomaston Fish & Game Clubs, the American Legion Plymouth Post , and the former Ukrainian Club.

A true outdoorsman, Alexander found joy in nature’s simplicity. He cultivated a love for hunting, fishing, and gardening, with a special interest in breeding beagles and springer spaniels for hunting. Even in his later years, he remained active, often seen mowing lawns, painting houses, or clearing snow—earning the admiration of neighbors for his remarkable determination and vitality.

Alexander was predeceased by his beloved wife, Reatha (Williams) Gromoshak, as well as his son, David, and stepdaughter, Judith Meachem. He was also the last surviving sibling of nine children, having been predeceased by his eight brothers and sisters.

He leaves behind a family who will cherish his memory forever: his son, Gary A. Gromoshak of Terryville; his daughters, Theresa Manchester of Plainville and Sandra L. Gromoshak of Hudson, NH; his stepdaughter, Jean Bonito of Ossining, NY; and his granddaughter, Alexandra M. Manchester of Bristol, CT, along with her children, Kameron and Ethan Turan. Alexander is also lovingly remembered by Judith’s children, Jerry, Joseph, and JoAnn, who reside in upstate New York, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Alexander’s life took place on Saturday, March 14, 2020. Funeral services began at Scott Funeral Home in Terryville, followed by a Divine Liturgy at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. A military burial honoring Alexander’s service was held at St. Michael’s Cemetery, and the day concluded with a luncheon at the church hall. Calling hours were held on Friday, March 13, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church or a charity of the donor’s choice, honoring Alexander’s generous spirit and enduring legacy.

Alexander Gromoshak will be remembered for his steadfast faith, boundless energy, and deep love for family and community. His memory lives on in the hearts of those he touched.
