Today, we celebrate the birthday of U.S. Army Specialist Philip C. S. Schiller, born on February 18, 1991, in Hartford, Connecticut. His life was defined by dedication, courage, and an unwavering commitment to serving others.

Phil grew up in Connecticut before moving to The Colony, Texas, where he graduated from The Colony High School in 2010. A proud member of the ROTC program, he demonstrated a strong sense of duty early on. Enlisting in the Army in 2009, he trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, and became an Infantryman in 2010. He further distinguished himself by completing the Combat Lifesavers Course in 2011 before his first deployment to Afghanistan.

Beyond his service, Phil was known for his kindness and high moral character. Neighbors admired his compassion, and his sister, Courtney, cherished him as her closest companion. His father, Erik, spoke of his son’s bravery and selflessness, qualities that defined him even in his final moments. Despite sustaining mortal wounds, Phil continued to shield his fellow soldiers, embodying the true spirit of a hero.

His sacrifice was recognized with the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge, honors that reflect his valor. Governor Dannel P. Malloy paid tribute to his heroism, and his legacy remains deeply woven into the hearts of those who knew him.

On his birthday, we remember and celebrate Philip’s life, his strength, and his dedication to others. His spirit lives on in the memories of those who loved him, and his legacy of bravery will never be forgotten. Happy Birthday, Phil—your courage and kindness continue to inspire.
