At 100 years old, World War II veteran and Iwo Jima survivor Joe Caminiti embarked on a profound journey to honor the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Accompanied by Neal Supranovich, historian of American Legion Post 2, Joe’s pilgrimage retraced the steps he took eight decades earlier, paying tribute to fallen comrades and preserving the legacy of those who served.

A Hero’s Return

On March 24, 2025, Joe and Neal departed from Bradley International Airport, setting forth on a journey that would span continents and memories. Their first stop was Washington, D.C., where they joined the main delegation. Despite the airport’s vast corridors, Joe, ever the Marine, declined assistance and opted for a brisk walk from gate D22 to gate C6, remarking that it compensated for a missed gym workout. The airline staff, recognizing Joe’s valor, ensured he boarded the plane first.

In Hawaii, the duo experienced the warmth of the crew, who were eager to capture moments with Joe. Flying first class, Joe enjoyed personal entertainment, with attentive flight attendants guiding him through the amenities.

Touching Guam’s Shores

On March 26, Joe arrived in Guam, stepping onto the same ground where he had once landed Marines during the Guam Campaign. Walking unaided over familiar terrain, he shared vivid recollections with a younger generation, embodying the spirit of a true Marine and a proud veteran of Bristol, Connecticut.

Joe is spending March 26–28 in Guam, where he is being honored for his role in the campaign. This visit holds deep meaning for him as he stands where history unfolded, retracing his past with unwavering pride.

Commemorating Iwo Jima

On March 29, Joe will take the final step of his journey, flying with the other Iwo Jima survivors to Iwo Jima—now called Iwoto—for the annual Reunion of Honor ceremony atop Mount Suribachi. As one of only eight survivors attending, and possibly the sole representative from the East Coast, Joe will stand where he once witnessed the iconic flag-raising.

Alongside U.S. and Japanese representatives, he will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony, honoring both American and Japanese soldiers who perished during the intense 36-day battle.

In a poignant tribute, Joe and Neal plan to read the names of 100 Connecticut men who lost their lives on Iwo Jima, including four from Bristol—three of whom Joe knew personally. This solemn act will underscore the deep personal connections and sacrifices of the war.

A Life of Dedication

Joe’s commitment to honoring his fellow servicemen extends beyond this journey. In October 2024, the New Britain Marine Corps League celebrated his 100th birthday at American Legion Post 2, highlighting his unwavering dedication. Joe, who enlisted at 17 by leaving high school, returned post-war to complete his education, exemplifying resilience and determination.

His fitness regimen remains impressive; Joe frequents The Edge Fitness Clubs in Bristol almost daily, attributing his longevity to regular exercise. This dedication ensures he remains prepared for endeavors like his current pilgrimage.

Legacy and Reflection

Joe’s journey to Iwo Jima is more than a trip down memory lane; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of those who served. By retracing his wartime footsteps and sharing his story, Joe bridges generations, ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are remembered and honored. His life serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the resilience, courage, and dedication that define true heroes.

Joe will begin his return journey on March 31 and is expected to arrive back in Bristol on April 1 between 4 and 6 p.m.
