John Francis Gardiner, born on August 19, 1958, in Hartford, Connecticut, was a man whose life was defined by his commitment to service, his creativity, and his love for those around him. On April 10, 2024, after a brave fight with colon cancer, John passed away, leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.
A Life Rooted in Service
From his early days at South Catholic High School to his decision to enlist in the Marine Corps in 1976, John approached life with a sense of purpose. His military service, particularly his time stationed in Morocco, shaped his sense of patriotism and fostered deep bonds with fellow veterans. John’s pride in his service and his support for other military men and women remained steadfast throughout his life.
A Career Built on Passion and Mentorship
After his military service, John found his calling as a land surveyor. He reveled in exploring the landscapes of Connecticut and New England, and his work allowed him to connect with the natural beauty of the region. But John’s impact went beyond the work itself—he was a mentor, imparting his knowledge and love for the profession to young surveyors who admired his expertise.
A Creative Spirit
John’s creativity extended far beyond his profession. Whether it was through doodles, comics, or watercolors, he expressed himself artistically, capturing moments of beauty, humor, and the essence of life as he saw it. His artistic contributions remain a testament to his unique perspective and his love for the people and experiences that shaped his world.
A Loving Husband, Father, and Friend
John’s family was always at the heart of his world. He was a devoted husband to Holly Zorra Gardiner, a loving father to daughters Sarah and Lauren Gardiner, loving stepfather to Andrew Zorra, Sirena Zorra and Tabitha Zorra. His relationship with his step-grandchildren, Lorenzo, Juniper, and Phineas, brought him immeasurable joy. John’s love was unconditional, whether it was cheering for the Red Sox, embracing his children’s musical passions, or standing by his loved ones through thick and thin.
A Legacy That Lives On

John leaves behind a family who will carry his memory with them forever. His wife, children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and siblings will hold on to the laughter, wisdom, and love he shared. John’s life continues to inspire those who knew him to live with the same integrity, kindness, and sense of humor that he embodied every day.
In honor of his memory, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or that individuals continue to advocate for the causes they believe in—just as John did throughout his life.
John F. Gardiner’s impact on the world around him cannot be measured in words alone. His love for life, his service to his country, and his devotion to his family and friends have left an indelible mark that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
