In Loving Memory of John Chris Schmidt (1949 – 2024)
With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to John Chris Schmidt, 74, of Rocky Hill, who peacefully passed away on March 31, 2024, at the Rocky Hill Veterans Home. Born in Detroit, Michigan, John was the beloved son of Arbutus (Taup) Schmidt and the late John F. Schmidt.
John dedicated a chapter of his life in service to his country as a proud member of the United States Navy during the tumultuous era of the Vietnam War. His commitment to duty and honor extended beyond his military service as he became an integral part of the veteran community, actively engaging with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and assuming the esteemed role of past Commander. His leadership and dedication to fellow veterans will always be remembered and cherished.
Beyond his military and community service, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He had a passion for the arts, often attending plays and immersing himself in the beauty of theatrical performances. Additionally, he possessed a wanderlust spirit, finding solace and excitement in travel, particularly relishing his adventures in Las Vegas, where he indulged in the thrill of gambling.
John leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Alongside his devoted mother, Arbutus, he is survived by his three sisters: Pamela Schmidt, Sandra Evanoff, and Dawn Lipke, all from Center Line, Michigan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who were touched by his kindness and wisdom.
As we honor John’s life and mourn his passing, let us hold dear the memories of his laughter, his warmth, and his unwavering dedication to serving others. May his spirit continue to inspire us to live with courage, compassion, and gratitude, just as he did throughout his remarkable journey.
Rest in peace, dear John. You will forever remain in our hearts.
