On February 22, we gather to honor and remember Army Specialist Jacob David Martir-Gutierrez on what would have been his 41st birthday. Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, on February 22, 1983, Jacob’s life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his country and his profound sense of duty.

Jacob, the son of Vietnam-era U.S. Army veteran Jose W. Martir and Lydia Gutierrez, grew up in Humacao, Puerto Rico, before moving to Norwich, Connecticut. He attended Norwich Free Academy briefly and later completed his high school equivalency diploma at Westover Job Corps Center in Chicopee, Massachusetts. With a deep-seated desire to serve, Jacob enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17 in February 2000.

As a member of Alpha Troop, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, SPC Martir-Gutierrez displayed remarkable bravery. His unit was deployed to Iraq in March 2004, where they faced intense combat. On August 18, 2004, while on patrol in Sadr City, Jacob’s unit came under enemy fire. Jacob’s heroic actions during this attack, including his ultimate sacrifice, earned him posthumous awards of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service.

Today, as we mark Jacob’s birthday, we reflect on his extraordinary life and the sacrifices he made. His funeral, held with full military honors, was a testament to the respect and admiration he garnered from family, friends, and fellow soldiers. Jacob is survived by his mother, Lydia Gutierrez, his siblings Yesenia Rosas, Jasmin Antonetty, Olgita Martir, Elizabeth Martir, and Ismael Martir, as well as his grandparents, great-grandmother, aunts, uncles, nieces, and numerous cousins.

SPC Jacob David Martir-Gutierrez’s birthday serves as a poignant reminder of his bravery and the indelible impact he had on those around him. His life, though cut short, exemplifies the values of service and sacrifice. As we celebrate his birthday, we honor Jacob’s legacy and the enduring memory of his courage and dedication. His sacrifice continues to inspire and remind us of the profound cost of freedom and the heroism of those who serve
