Images of D-Day: Documenting the Greatest Amphibious Invasion in History

Images of D-Day: Documenting the Greatest Amphibious Invasion in History
Saturday, June 7, 2025, 1:00 – 3:00 pm
On June 6, 1944, the long-awaited liberation of Nazi-Occupied Europe began. Among the tens of thousands of Allied soldiers, sailors, and airmen who participated in the invasion of Normandy were a few dozen still and motion picture cameramen who documented the historic event. You have probably seen some of the images they shot in books, news reports or documentaries.
Our presenter, Tom Hogan, has spent years researching the efforts and experiences of the American servicemen who were behind the cameras during OPERATION OVERLORD including the personnel of the Field Photographic Unit from the Office of Strategic Services lead by the acclaimed Hollywood director John Ford. For many years, historians have wondered if combat photos and film footage of the landings were lost or intentionally kept from the public. Tom will explore the facts and myths of D-Day film coverage and will present previously overlooked photos and film.
Please email SOSIwo Jima@yahoo.com or call Gary at (860) 810-8736 to reserve your spot. Donations of $5 for the museum are greatly appreciated.
