Remembering Maurice “Moe” L. Collin: A Tribute to a Vietnam War Veteran

On May 5, 2023, at the age of 75, Maurice “Moe” L. Collin, a revered Vietnam War veteran, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion, and dedication. Born on March 22, 1948, in Frenchville, Maine, Moe was the son of Lucien and Therese Collin. Throughout his life, Moe’s adventurous spirit and commitment to serving others defined his journey.

At the tender age of 17, Moe embarked on a transformative path by joining the Marine Corps, setting the stage for a remarkable journey of bravery and selflessness. His service took him to distant lands, including Iceland and Cuba, before his deployment to the tumultuous battlegrounds of Vietnam. It was during his deployment at Khe Sanh in 1968 that Moe was wounded, an event that earned him the prestigious Purple Heart.

Following his honorable discharge from the military due to disability, Moe embarked on a new chapter of service as an auto body mechanic and postman, supporting his family while nurturing his passion for aiding fellow veterans. His unwavering dedication led him to devote his life to advocating for disabled veterans, serving through organizations like the Disabled American Veterans and the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs (CTDVA).

Moe’s commitment to his fellow veterans was unwavering. He served as a Veteran Service Officer (VSO) and later as the Supervisor of the Office of Advocacy and Assistance (OA&A) with the CTDVA, ensuring that veterans received the benefits they rightfully deserved. His exemplary service earned him recognition, including induction into the CT Veterans Hall of Fame—a testament to his tireless advocacy and leadership.

Even after retiring from state service, Moe continued his mission of service, volunteering his time at the Newington VA Medical Center and supporting various veterans’ organizations, including the Disabled American Veterans and the Vietnam Veterans of America. His impact extended far beyond his military service, touching the lives of countless individuals within the veteran community.

Outside of his service, Moe cherished moments spent with his family and friends, reveling in the beauty of nature and the joy of live performances. He embraced life with a profound sense of gratitude, embodying the philosophy that “every day is a gift.” Moe found solace by the lake, savoring moments of peace and camaraderie with loved ones.

Moe leaves behind a legacy of love and service, survived by his beloved wife Leila, his children Marc and Bryan, grandchildren, and a host of cherished friends and relatives. His memory lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service held in Moe’s honor provided an opportunity for friends and family to pay their respects and celebrate his remarkable life. Military honors were rendered at the State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, CT, where Moe was laid to rest with the utmost respect and gratitude for his service.

In lieu of flowers, donations to organizations like the Disabled American Veterans and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital were encouraged, reflecting Moe’s enduring commitment to helping others in need.

As we reflect on Moe’s life and legacy, let us remember his words and actions as a call to gratitude and kindness. To honor his memory, let us take a moment to express our gratitude to the veterans among us, recognizing the sacrifices they have made for our freedom and security. In doing so, we honor the spirit of Maurice “Moe” L. Collin—a true patriot and hero.
