On this solemn Angelversary, we honor the life, service, and sacrifice of Army Capt. Benjamin A. Sklaver, who left this world on October 2, 2009, at the age of 32, while serving in Afghanistan. Born on October 22, 1976, in North Haven, Connecticut, Ben was a true humanitarian, driven by a deep sense of duty to serve not just his country but people in need around the globe.
Benjamin’s path of service began with an unwavering dedication to making the world a better place. He attended Foote School, Hamden High School, and Tufts University, later earning a master’s degree from the prestigious Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. His academic and professional journey prepared him to tackle global challenges, and he dedicated much of his career to improving the lives of those affected by conflict and hardship.
During his military career, Capt. Sklaver was assigned to the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion, U.S. Army Reserve, based in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was deeply committed to winning the hearts and minds of the Afghan people, working tirelessly to establish meaningful connections with local communities in an effort to reduce the influence of the Taliban. His mission in Afghanistan was to help rebuild lives through providing access to schools, healthcare, and clean water. Sadly, he was killed in Kandahar by a suicide bomber during an ambush, while fulfilling his noble mission.
In addition to his military service, Benjamin’s passion for humanitarian work extended beyond the battlefield. He founded the ClearWater Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing clean drinking water to communities in Uganda and other regions suffering from water shortages. His organization, entirely volunteer-run, has since brought life-saving water to over 6,500 people, with a vision of reaching many more.
Benjamin was more than a soldier—he was a compassionate leader and a man deeply loved by his family and friends. He leaves behind his parents, Laura and Gary Sklaver, his siblings Anna and Samuel, his beloved fiancée Beth Segaloff, and her son Danny, who brought him great joy. He also leaves numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and his godson and nephew, Redmond. His legacy of love and service will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
As we remember Benjamin on this Angelversary, we celebrate his remarkable life—a life of courage, compassion, and a commitment to making the world a better place. He exemplified the highest ideals of service, whether in the uniform of his country or through his tireless humanitarian efforts. His memory continues to inspire us all to strive for a better world.
Capt. Benjamin A. Sklaver will forever be remembered for his selflessness, his dedication to his country, and his unwavering commitment to the betterment of humanity. We honor his legacy today and always.
