The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: 100 Years of U.S. Military Guard — Thursday Preview Feature
In this week’s Thursday Preview, we recognize a historic military milestone—the 100-year legacy of U.S. military guards posted at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This centennial specifically commemorates the establishment of permanent U.S. military guard duty in 1926, distinguishing it from earlier periods when the Tomb was protected by civilian watchmen and temporary military details, but not yet under a continuous, formalized guard.
Located within Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was established following World War I to honor unidentified American service members. The first Unknown Soldier was interred on November 11, 1921, in a national ceremony that symbolized collective remembrance for all who were lost without identification.
In the years immediately following the burial, the Tomb was respectfully protected and monitored by a combination of civilian guards and assigned military personnel during specific hours and ceremonial periods. While these early efforts ensured dignity and security at the site, they did not yet represent the structured, dedicated military guard tradition that exists today.
That tradition formally began on March 25, 1926, when the United States Army established a permanent military guard at the Tomb. This date marks the foundation of the 100-year commemoration recognized in this publication. From that point forward, the responsibility of guarding the Tomb transitioned into a defined military duty carried out by trained soldiers assigned specifically to this mission.
The guard mission evolved further on July 2, 1937, when continuous, around-the-clock guarding of the Tomb began. Since that time, the Tomb has been under uninterrupted watch 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, regardless of weather conditions, national emergencies, or global events. This unbroken vigil has endured through war, peace, and every season in between.
Today, the Tomb is guarded by elite members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, commonly known as The Old Guard, the United States Army’s oldest active-duty infantry unit. Soldiers who serve as sentinels undergo extensive training and meet strict standards before earning the right to stand watch. Their duties require precision, discipline, and a deep understanding of the symbolism behind every movement they perform.
The sentinel’s pacing pattern—21 steps across the mat, a 21-second pause, and a return—reflects the 21-gun salute, the highest military honor. The weapon is always carried on the shoulder facing away from the Tomb, symbolizing constant vigilance and protection of those interred.
The Tomb itself has expanded in meaning over time with the addition of unknown service members from World War II and the Korean War. Remains associated with the Vietnam War were once interred at the site but later identified and returned to their family in 1998, reflecting advances in identification technology and the continued effort to account for all missing service members.
This 100-year commemoration does not mark the creation of the Tomb, nor the initial interment in 1921. Rather, it honors the establishment of the formal, permanent U.S. military guard in 1926 and the century of continuous service that has followed. It stands as a testament to discipline, duty, and the enduring commitment of the United States Armed Forces to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice without recognition.

Hosted at the New Milford VFW, this Coffee House is open to all veterans and spouses. Representatives from the Connecticut VA Health system will be present to answer questions regarding benefits and healthcare, providing a valuable resource for the veteran community.

Taking place at the World War II Legacy Foundation Museum in East Hartford, this commemoration reflects on the historic Battle of Iwo Jima and honors those who served and sacrificed during one of World War II’s most pivotal battles.

Hosted at CT State Community College in Danielson, this public mental health event focuses on recognizing hidden struggles. The program includes educational content and peer support resources designed to raise awareness and provide support to those in need.
