Army Private First Class Orlando E. Gonzalez – Bridgeport, Connecticut

Army Private First Class Orlando Eric Gonzalez was born on June 27, 1985, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He spent the first years of his life in Connecticut before moving with his family to Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, at age six, where he grew into a spirited, energetic youth known for his athleticism, friendliness, and quick smile. He earned the nickname “Speedy” for his ability to run a mile in under four minutes and for his boundless enthusiasm — qualities that endeared him to classmates, coaches, and mentors alike.

Orlando attended Susquehannock High School in Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 2005. Teachers and friends remembered him as outgoing, warm, and upbeat, always ready with a laugh or encouraging word. He was deeply involved with his local church, the Shrewsbury Assembly of God, and frequently worked with youth at Summit Grove Camp, where his positive influence and leadership left a substantial impact on those around him.

After high school, driven by a strong sense of duty and a heartfelt desire to serve his country, Orlando enlisted in the United States Army in June 2005. He successfully completed Cavalry Scout One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and then the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, earning his paratrooper wings. He was subsequently assigned to Troop A, 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

In early 2007, PFC Gonzalez deployed with his unit to Iraq, where he served as a scout javelin gunner, performing reconnaissance and support missions in Diyala Province. His military service was marked by dedication and professionalism, and he quickly earned respect from his fellow Soldiers and leaders.

While operating near Baqubah, Iraq, on March 25, 2007, Orlando and his team were engaged in community outreach — including distributing candy to local children — when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive near their vehicle. In this tragic incident, PFC Gonzalez lost his life while serving at just 21 years old. His sacrifice was part of a broader act of compassion toward Iraqi civilians, reflecting his innate kindness even amid danger.

For his service and sacrifice, PFC Gonzalez was recognized with multiple military honors, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge, and the Parachutist’s Badge — recognitions that reflect both his bravery and commitment to duty.

Orlando’s family — including his father Orlando G. Gonzalez Jr., his mother Carmen M. Diaz, his sister Jennifer M. Jackson, and his brothers Frank, Michael, and Nathaniel — remember him not only as a Soldier but as a beacon of joy, strength, and unwavering kindness. His presence brought light to every room, and his memory lives on through the countless lives he touched and the values he embodied.
