Army Sergeant Felix M. Del Greco Jr. was born on July 18, 1981, and grew up in Simsbury, Connecticut, where he was deeply involved in his community from an early age. As a youth he was active in Scouting, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, a distinction that reflected his leadership, integrity, and commitment to service. At Simsbury High School, Felix contributed to the school’s jazz band as a trumpet player and worked behind the scenes on theater and performance productions, combining artistic creativity with disciplined teamwork.

18 Jul 1981 – 9 Apr 2004
Felix’s interests included music, outdoor activities, and sharing experiences with friends and peers. Friends remember him as outgoing, charismatic, and able to connect with people from all walks of life. He enjoyed writing poetry, playing music, and, even as a young man, often spoke of his many dreams — including someday entering public service or leadership roles that could make a positive difference beyond his immediate circle.
While still in high school, Felix enlisted in the Connecticut Army National Guard on March 30, 1999, joining Headquarters Company, 242d Engineer Battalion and shipping to basic training that June. His early decision to serve reflected a deeply rooted sense of duty and a desire to contribute to something greater than himself. The Guard became an extension of his community values, where he learned discipline, camaraderie, and the importance of leadership that puts others first.
Before his service in Iraq, Felix had already contributed internationally with the Guard. In 2001, he deployed for a peacekeeping mission to Bosnia, gaining firsthand experience in multinational operations and the responsibilities of representing the United States abroad. In 2003, his unit supported domestic security missions, including providing assistance at West Point, where Guard Soldiers helped ensure safety and continuity during a period of heightened homeland security needs.
Felix’s devotion to service did not end with these deployments. In December 2003, he volunteered to deploy to Iraq with his unit — not because he was ordered, but because he believed in the mission and wanted to help build a better future for the people and stability of the region. Arriving in Baghdad, his unit began patrols and operations that supported broader efforts of security, reconstruction, and cooperation.
On April 9, 2004, while on mounted patrol in Baghdad, Sgt. Del Greco Jr. lost his life in service when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device and came under small arms attack. He was 22 years old. At the time of his passing, he was the first member of the Connecticut Army National Guard to lose his life in the conflict in Iraq, a distinction that brought both profound sorrow and immense respect from his family, friends, and fellow Soldiers.
Felix’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched both at home and abroad. His warmth, energy, sense of humor, and generous spirit were remembered at his memorial service by hundreds of family, friends, and community members who spoke of his impact on their lives. A friend recounted long talks they shared about Felix’s dream of someday running for President and making a difference, highlighting not only his patriotism but his ambitious vision for a life of influence and service.
In recognition of his service and sacrifice, Sergeant Del Greco Jr. was honored posthumously with multiple decorations, including the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge — each reflecting his courage, his commitment to his fellow Soldiers, and the integrity with which he carried out his duties.
Felix’s influence extended beyond his immediate military service. In his memory, a memorial scholarship was established to support the children of Connecticut National Guard members, ensuring that his legacy of leadership, service, and community continues to benefit future generations. Friends and family continue to honor his life through annual remembrances, community events, and personal stories shared across years and milestones, preserving his spirit for those who follow.
He is remembered not only as a Soldier who served with distinction but as a beloved son, brother, friend, and neighbor — a young man whose laughter, compassion, and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on all who knew him. His life’s story, though tragically brief, stands as a testament to the enduring power of service, sacrifice, and love for country.
