Army Sgt. Benjamin James Gilman was born on October 18, 1978, in New Haven, Connecticut, and raised in Meriden, where he grew up with a strong sense of family, community, and service. He graduated from Meriden High School and developed a reputation for integrity, determination, and a desire to help others — traits that shaped both his personal and military life.

Answering the call to serve his country, Benjamin enlisted in the United States Army, embracing the challenges of infantry service. As a Sergeant, he trained rigorously, developed tactical expertise, and earned the respect of fellow Soldiers and subordinates alike. Known for his quiet strength and steady leadership, he was a source of guidance and confidence within his unit.
Sgt. Gilman deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, serving in a combat zone during a particularly challenging period of operations near Fallujah, Iraq. On January 24, 2004, during the course of his mission, Sgt. Gilman lost his life in the line of duty, honoring his commitment to his fellow Soldiers and to the mission. He was 25 years old.
His loss was deeply felt by family, friends, and the community of Meriden, as well as by the Soldiers he led. Those who knew him remember Benjamin as a devoted son, loyal friend, and exemplary Soldier whose dedication to service and leadership set a standard for others to follow.
