United States Army Spc. Philip C. S. Schiller was born on February 18, 1991, in Hartford, Connecticut, and grew up with deep ties to both Hartford and the Winsted area. As a youth, he exhibited strong character, a sense of duty, and a compassionate spirit that shaped his relationships with family, friends, and neighbors. He attended Oliver Wolcott Regional Vocational Technical School in Torrington before his family moved to The Colony, Texas, where he continued his education. While in Texas, Phil became an active member of his high school Junior ROTC program at The Colony High School, where he demonstrated early leadership and a deep interest in serving others.

Phil graduated from high school in 2010, inspired by a desire to serve his country and influenced by the values of responsibility, courage, and teamwork fostered through his family and community. With these guiding principles, he enlisted in the United States Army in 2009. He completed both Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he trained as an Infantryman (MOS 11B) in 2010, gaining the skills that would define his service in the infantry. In 2011, Spc. Schiller completed Combat Lifesaver Course training, further expanding his capability to support and protect his fellow Soldiers on the battlefield.
Assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis‑McChord, Washington, Phil deployed in March 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His role placed him directly in combat operations in Afghanistan, where he served with distinction, dedication, and devotion to his comrades. Fellow Soldiers remembered him as a man of integrity, courage, and quiet strength — someone who stood ready to assist others and meet every challenge with resolve.
On April 11, 2012, while operating in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Spc. Philip C. S. Schiller’s unit came under enemy attack. He sustained mortal wounds during the engagement and lost his life while serving at just 21 years old — a profound and heart‑wrenching loss for his family, friends, and fellow servicemembers.
In recognition of his service, bravery, and the ultimate sacrifice he made, Spc. Schiller was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal posthumously. His military honors also include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Combat Infantryman Badge, each reflecting his courage, skill, and steadfast commitment to duty.
Phil was laid to rest with full military honors at Dallas‑Fort Worth National Cemetery in Texas, where family, fellow Soldiers, and leaders gathered to pay tribute to his life of service. He is survived by his father Erik Schiller, his mother, and his sister, all of whom carry forward his memory with pride, love, and deep gratitude for his sacrifice. Phil’s life continues to be remembered as one of compassion, bravery, and selfless service — a legacy that inspires all who learn his story.
